What is respite?

Respite is when someone cares for your child with disability, autism or other additional needs for a while.

It’s ok to say you need a break. Respite care for children is good for families.

Taking a break can give you a chance to recharge and look after your physical and mental wellbeing, spend more time with other family members.

Respite care can be for a few hours during the day in your home (child minding) for longer periods or providing community-based support.

They can help you manage after-school routines your child finds challenging like homework, self-care and other home-based routines.

Out in your Community

This kind of respite gets your child involved in community access activities that can help them develop independent living skills and social skills.

It gives you the opportunity to take a break or connect with others in your community.
