Skills or Qualifications Required

The most important requirement for a potential thrapist is a genuine interest in working with children with autism.

ABA therapy is more than just a part-time job and should not be considered just as a means of earning a few extra dollars.  It is a commitment, as well as a potential career move for those people interested in working with children in the disability field in the longer term.

You need patience, problem-solving ability, creativity, discretion, the ability to think on y our feet and a lot of energy.  A good sense of humour and a positive outlook helps too as does the ability to accept constructive criticism and to be able to work independently, and as part of a team.

Training Required

If you think you may be interested in therapy work, it is a good idea to attend an introductory ABA workshop and interview.  This may help you make a decision on whether or  not the work would suit you.

The first step in becoming an Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Therapist is to complete the Introductory Training Workshop to be accredited as an ABA Therapist Level 1.  ABAlink offers an Applied Behaviour Analysis Training Workshop where you will learn the principles of ABA and how to apply the methodology to teaching children with ASD or developmental delays.

If you think you would like to proceed, ABAlink provides a 2 day weekend intensive ABA Training Workshop which you will need to pass. Please email us at  enquiries@abalink.com.au for any further information you may require.

Employment Opportunities

Usually, the demand for therapists exceeds the supply - so there is plenty of work available.

WORK AS A SHADOW / TEACHER'S AIDE

Shadows / Teacher's Aides work with children who are transitioning from an intensive program to a mainstream pre-school/school setting.  The shadow/teacher's aides act as a prompt to learning in the classroom (academic, social, independent living skills etc.,)

The shadow/teacher's aide is the interpreter for the child if the directions being given are not in their repertoire.  Aides provide redirection as needed and helps bridge consistency in performance.

Benefits of being an ABA Therapist

Therapists have the opportunity to work with some wonderful children and, with a therapists's help, children with autism can overcome the frustration - and control the behavioural outbursts - that frequently occur in children with autism who have not had appropriate intervention.

Often, ABA Therapists are Psychology, Speech Pathology, OT and Teaching students who gain extra experience and expertise by working as a therapist.  Some therapists go on to become full time therapists and ABA Supervisors, where they supervise and run ABA programs themselves.

The "hand on" experience people with this background derive from working as Therapists is invaluable and many find that therapy work leads to career opportunities in the Disability Sector.

Working as an ABA Therapist

When working on an ABA program you will be part of a team of therapists and professionals who oversees the program contents and direction.

Each respective Provider has a Senior Behaviour Therapist who leads the team of Junior Therapists by answering questions and analyzing and checking data for consistency.  There may be several Junior Therapists on a team.

Everyone is encouraged to contribute observations and feedback to the parents and the Program Supervisor at a monthly clinic/team meeting.  These meetings are invaluable for, among other things, identifying and targeting problem behaviours, advancing programs, asking and answering questions and basically making sure drills are executed consistently across all team members.  These meetings are so crucial that a therapist is not permitted to work on a program if they cannot commit to the monthly clinic meeting.

Want to find out more about ABA?

ABA has more scientific research to support it than any other treatment program for children with Autism.  ABA is the application of the empirically validated principles of "behaviour" to the process of increasing skills and reducing unwanted behaviour.  In an ABA program each skill to be taught is broken into small steps so the child can learn more easily and these steps are taught systematically in a hierarchy.

ABA programs are highly individualised and cover all areas of the child's development - communication, play, social / relationship, academic and motor skills.  All decisions about the child's program are determined by the continuously collected data.  This allows the child to make the best possible progress and to have a program tailored to their unique configuration of strengths and weaknesses.

An ABA program should be enjoyable for the child, due to the positive reinforcing environment, positive relationships, and because the child, often for the first time, is successful.
